On April 5, World Awareness Day is celebrated, a date promulgated by the UN in 2019, and which consists of promoting a global awareness in the world, beyond political or economic agreements. The UN asks governments, social agents and people in general to promote a Culture of Peace with Love and Conscience. Consciousness is something difficult to explain because of the abstractness of the term. If we look at the etymology of the word, the word comes from the Latin conscientia (“with knowledge”). That means that the word conscience refers to what the subject or human being knows.
But the United Nations expands the meaning of that word to a more social sense. It is about protecting future generations from wars, about human beings acting with values of justice, democracy, solidarity and human rights. It is about each and every person, but also societies and rulers acting guided by values of peace and love. A collective consciousness that must be forged in each and every one of us. Explained like this, the concept seems a bit utopian, but the UN intends to promote this culture in order to extend this change of consciousness throughout the world. To promote this idea, educational, cultural, social and civic activities are necessary, aimed at all ages and all social groups, so that everyone has the opportunity to give, learn and share.
It is about the culture of peace being inseparable from culture as such. And for that you need a lot of strategy.
The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic unleashed in the world between 2019 and 2020 has taught everyone that there is a culture of solidarity with the sole objective of the common good. Many countries have decreed the confinement of their compatriots who have had to abandon all social, work and leisure activities, with the sole objective of stopping the global pandemic that is causing the death of tens of thousands of people and freeing the health systems of a pressure to which they had never been exposed in the modern age. The response of millions of people around the planet staying at home and respecting the rules decreed by the authorities for the common good, has shown that there is undoubtedly a consciousness superior to each one of us. And that when we overcome this pandemic, this awareness must be reinforced.
